A Scary Observation About Junk Food

It seems like there’s always food sitting around our station for people to enjoy. Sometimes it’s donuts, other times it’s cookies, and we’ll even get pizza from time to time. For some reason (I have no idea why), we had tortilla chips and queso for a week straight. All of that stuff gets devoured within two seconds. I don’t even think people are hungry…it’s free and it’s food, so they attack it.

Yesterday, one of our photographers brought in fresh watermelon from his garden. He chopped it into chunks and put it in a bowl. He left it in the newsroom for everyone to try. The only problem is…no one really ate it. A few people picked at it, but it wasn’t attacked like the junk food usual is. When I left the station last night (around midnight), there was still some watermelon left.

I thought that was really interesting. The bad stuff gets swallowed in a second, while the healthy option went fairly untouched. What’s up with that?

I guess it’s starting to add up for me though…

I’ve lost 40 pounds over the last five months, so a lot of people ask me how I’ve made such a major change. The answer is simple…make the right choices. That’s especially important when it comes to food. A lot of people want to know what I eat, but many give me such an unusual response when I tell them. I’ll say a chicken breast, with vegetables, and some cottage cheese, and they look at me with disgust. It’s like I just told them that I eat handfuls of cockroaches for dinner. I didn’t realize healthy food had such a bad reputation.

I constantly hear people say they want to lose weight, but they don’t have time to make dinner or they wish there was a healthy fast food option. I have to ask the question though…if there was a healthy restaurant, would anyone really eat there? Let’s say there’s a restauarant that serves healthy meals (maybe a portion of salmon, fresh vegetables, and brown rice) right next to a McDonald’s. For the example, you can get the same amount of food for the same price and you can walk out the door in the same amount of time. Where do you think people would eat? I hate to say it, but I think more folks would still lean toward McDonald’s.

I’m not trying to sound like I’m better than anyone else. Five months ago, I was 230 pounds and enjoying every ounce of junk food I could get my hands on. I’m still not perfect. I’m far from it. Last night I bought Oreo cookies and milk after work. I didn’t hold back when I got home either. I rarely cheat, so Oreos never tasted so good in my life. The biggest difference for me now is that I have control. Instead of giving into a craving, I made the choice to go away from my diet and enjoy something different. I honestly would’ve been just fine going directly home and making a healthy snack, but I really wanted to mix things up.

It’s interesting how everything has changed for me. When I started my quest for fitness, I thought I would incorporate some of the bad foods back into my diet as time went on. The funny thing is, the junk food that I enjoyed back then (I make it sound like it was years ago), looks terrible to me now. I ate a ton of fast food, but now I won’t touch the stuff. I don’t want to. It doesn’t even look good to me anymore. In just five months, my life has changed dramatically.

I would love to know what you think about all of this. Do you see the same trends with the people around you? Do you think people would choose the healthy alternative or the fast food restaurant?
