Fantasy Football: Team #2 & Team #3

I introduced you to my first fantasy football team earlier this week, now my other two squads are drafted and ready to roll.

The first of my new teams is in a league with college friends of mine. It’s a ten team league with a standard scoring system. I mention that because my other league is set up much different, but I’ll get more into that in a second.

Here’s my starting lineup for Team #2:

Johnny Late Night (it’s a nickname I had in college…it’s safe to say that I partied too much)

QB – Tony Romo, Dallas
RB – Adrian Peterson, Minnesota
RB – Beanie Wells, Arizona
WR – Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona
WR – Calvin Johnson, Detroit
WR/TE – Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh
TE – Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta
D/ST – Baltimore
K – Robbie Gould, Chicago

I was distracted at work during my online draft (that’s the problem with working evenings), so I don’t have a lot of confidence in my squad.

I like my running game. Adrian Peterson was my keeper and I don’t have to explain why. I like Beanie Wells so much that I placed him on my All-Sleeper team. I have even more confidence in him now with the uncertain quarterback situation in Arizona (how in the world did Derek Anderson get another starting job???). I also have Joseph Addai, Michael Bush, and Thomas Jones on my bench.

I can’t complain about my top two wide receivers, but I’m a little concerned about how Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson are going to get the ball. While the QB situation in Arizona helps Wells, it hurts Fitz. I have faith that Johnson will bounce back from a sub-par 2009, but I can’t guarantee anything. My fingers are crossed. I also have Mike Wallace on my All-Sleeper team. I didn’t know he’d be in one of my starting lineups when I wrote that. I’m a little worried now. Kenny Britt and Santonio Holmes don’t add much excitement on my bench either.

I’ve had Tony Romo as my quarterback on this team the last two years and I won the championship both seasons, so I jumped at the opportunity to draft him again (especially in the fifth round). That’s all I need to say about that.

I had the choice of Tony Gonzalez or Brent Celek (the best available tight ends at the time)…I went with Gonzalez. Who would you have picked? I’m happy with my decision, but you might think I’m an idiot. That’s why I love fantasy football! Everyone has an opinion.

I don’t really care about my kicker. I could have Ray Finkle or Robbie Gould and be completely content. It just doesn’t matter. Any kicker can get you points on Sunday. It all comes down to the matchups.

OK…on to my next team.

Like I mentioned earlier, this league is a little unusual. It’s a 14 team league with co-workers, so depth is really hard to come by. It’s also a very quarterback focused league, because QBs get half of a point for every completion (it used to be a point per completion, but it got really ridiculous). The rest of the scoring is pretty standard, except we also get a point per reception.

I felt like I needed to explain that before I showed you my team. With that out of the way…here is Team #3:

Land of Boz (Do you remember that poster? I was a huge Brian Bosworth fan as a kid in Seattle)

QB – Jay Cutler, Chicago
RB – Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh
RB – Jonathan Stewart, Carolina
WR – Andre Johnson, Houston
WR – DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia
WR/RB – Jerome Harrison, Cleveland
TE – Kellen Winslow, Tampa Bay
K – ???
DEF – Philadelphia

Everyone in this league keeps their quarterback, so that means there aren’t many options once the draft starts. That’s a big problem. I didn’t have the luxury of keeping my quarterback from last year because it was Kurt Warner, so I wound up with Jay Cutler. I’m pissed, but I could have done worse (but not much worse). I pray that he cleans up his act this year (very wishful thinking). Donovan McNabb (who I had on my All-Bust team) is my backup.

I’m pretty happy with my running backs. I have full confidence in Rashard Mendenhall, especially with Ben Roethlisberger suspended to start the season. The Steelers will turn to the running game as Dennis Dixon guides the attack. I like Mendenhall even after Big Ben comes back as well. I wish Jonathan Stewart didn’t have to split carries with DeAngelo Williams, but he’s shown that he can still put up big numbers year in and year out. Jerome Harrison was on my All-Sleeper team, and he gets an extra boost with Montario Hardesty going on Injured Reserve. Steve Slaton and Javon Ringer are my backups (remember depth is hard to come by in a 14 team league).

Andre Johnson was my keeper. He’s a fantasy star to begin with, but he’s a superstar when it’s a point per reception league. I love having him on my roster. It’s a different story for DeSean Jackson. Philadelphia likes to spread the wealth, so he’ll never lead the league in receptions. That’s OK. He’s still a threat to wrack up 100+ yards every week. Hakeem Nicks, Mohamed Massaquoi, and Kenny Britt are my backups (yes, I realize that Britt is in the doghouse in Tennessee right now).

I wish I had a better tight end, but Kellen Winslow works. I also won’t complain about Philadelphia’s defense/special teams either. I’m actually really happy to have the Eagles on my team. They were rated as my No. 2 defense.

I have question marks for my kicker, because I had to leave the draft before my last pick. I told the commissioner to give me the best leg available. Like I mentioned before, I don’t care for kickers. It wasn’t even worth a phone call to find out who I got. I have a feeling I’ll be going with a kicker-by-committee.

That’s all I have for you tonight. I’ll let you know how my squads are doing during the season. Again, I plan on a weekly fantasy football article with my picks for the week, players you should pickup, etc.

The NFL is officially back on Thursday! I hope you’re as excited as I am.

Let me know what you think of my teams. You can leave a comment below, get in touch with me on Twitter @lewissports, connect with me on Facebook, or email me at tim@timlewissports.com. I would love some feedback!
