I’ve Survived A Month (Almost)!

It’s been almost a month since I started my latest fitness quest and there’s good news to report. I’m still alive. I wasn’t so sure that would be the case when the adventure began on April 27th. There have been a few hiccups along the way, but I’m VERY HAPPY with the way things are going.

I was on a local radio show called the Locker Room (@LockerRoom1510) on Friday and the host told me that it didn’t look like I needed to go on a diet to begin with. I thought that was a nice compliment. At the same time, it’s not all about losing weight. I wasn’t healthy. For me, it’s about becoming more physically fit. I’m seeing those results more and more every week. With better fitness comes other benefits like sleeping better, a more positive attitude about life in general, and confidence. In other words…I feel great!

I’m seeing a lot of improvement in the weight loss area as well. I started at 230 pounds, dropped to 219 after one week, bounced back up to 221 pounds after two weeks, dropped back down to 215 after three weeks, and I’m proud to announce that I’m down to 208 pounds after four weeks. I’m starting to fall in love with the break room scale. It’s always giving me good news!

I’ve obviously lost a significant amount of weight in a short period of time, so I wanted to make sure that I’m going about this the right way. I asked my friend Joe (@BauerFitness) for help. Joe and I worked out together all the time in high school. While I slowly stopped going to the gym…he actually made a career of it. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology from San Diego State University and worked as a personal trainer in New York City after he graduated. Now he shares his knowledge online. I wrote down all of my workouts and everything I ate for a week and emailed it to him. I was a little surprised when he told me I was doing an “awesome” job (I’m really just guessing how to do all of this). It was nice to know that I’m getting healthy in a healthy way (eating small meals every two or three hours, making the right food choices, etc.).

It was also nice to hear that he cheats on his diet once a week as well. Instead of a full day of cheating though, he chooses a three-hour time period that he can eat anything he wants (he usually chooses an extra large Brooklyn-style pizza). He says you should only allow yourself the cheat time if you’ve stuck to your diet all week. Believe it or not, he says it’s actually good for you to break away for a few hours. It’s good mentally (because it’s a reward) and it’s good physically (because it shocks the system). So, unlike the last two weeks where I’ve cheated all day, I followed his lead and only allowed myself one GREAT meal this week. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I could hardly get through it because my body can’t down massive amounts of food anymore.

There’s no doubt that it takes dedication and commitment to get fit. It’s time consuming and the food can be extremely boring (that’s a tasteless salad (extra lean ground turkey, cottage cheese, lettuce, cucumbers, and pepperoncini peppers) I made the other night). With that said, getting fit is pretty simple. I’ve figured out that you just have to make the right choices. People always bring goodies into the newsroom (donuts, candy, etc.) and in the past I always jumped all over it (there’s nothing better than free food). Now, I make the choice to avoid the junk food. I have to make decisions like that all the time. Do I swing into McDonald’s on my dinner break or do I go home and make chicken? Do I lay around the house for another hour or do I get up and go to the gym? If you stick to your plan…it’s really not that hard.

Some of the greatest satisfaction I’ve got out of this whole adventure comes from having self-control. There’s something really special about fighting an urge to break the rules. It’s also very rewarding to reach inside and push yourself to the limit at the gym (especially when you go there without much motivation). It’s like you are constantly being tested and always getting a passing grade. It’s great!

There’s nothing that helps me push through my workouts more than music. I don’t mind lifting weights without tunes, but I WILL NOT do cardio without my iPod. It’s way too boring. There are two songs that have really helped me out lately. I couldn’t tell you what they are singing about (and I don’t really care), but the music itself pushes me. The first song is “Don’t Forget Sister” by Low vs Diamond and the other is “Killing In The Name Of” by Rage Against The Machine (surprise, surprise). There are obviously other songs I listen to, but those are my favorite “gym songs” right now.

Cardio is even easier when there is something entertaining on television. I make sure there’s a game or games on when I go to the gym on the weekend. Last Sunday, I set one TV to the Seattle Mariners game against the Tampa Bay Rays and another TV to Game One of the NHL Western Conference finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks. I used an elliptical machine right in between the two. I was in sports/fitness heaven. That was the quickest hour of cardio I’ve ever done.

I want to give a big thank you to my friend Matt (@mattyreich). I was dragging a little bit last Monday until I hopped online. He sent me an awesome email. It got me out of my apartment and into the gym. He got me excited again. Here is the final line of his note to me:

“Remember it’s all about your thinking. Stay positive in mind, get rid of negativity. Become a better man every day.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…thank you to everyone who shares their fitness stories with me. My buddy Danny (who is in the process of trying to lose a few pounds) called me “an inspiration” the other day. I thought that was awesome! One of my co-workers started bringing a jug of water to work after he saw me doing it. That was cool too! I’ll keep this going every day for the rest of my life if I know that the things I do push others to be better. I hoped that would happen, but I didn’t know if it really would.

I’m always open to healthy recipes, hearing stories (good or bad) about your fitness quest, or anything else. Please leave a comment below or email me at tim@timlewissports.com. You can also reach me on Twitter @TLKREM2 or @lewissports. You can also visit the “Fans of Tim Lewis” page on Facebook.

A couple of very random notes…

My golf game is coming around (sort of). I shot my best score of the year on Sunday. I still have a long way to go before I shoot in the 70s though.

I’ve never purchased an entire season of a television show on iTunes until this weekend. The big winner…Community. I think it’s the funniest show on TV (then again…I don’t watch much TV). Only Family Guy makes me laugh as hard as Community does. Sadly, I think that also shows how adolescent my sense of humor is.

I wonder if I can get in trouble for promoting an NBC show???

Like I said…random.

We’ll talk soon!
