NFL Draft Preview

It’s unclear if there are going to be any games in the fall, but the the NFL Draft will go on as scheduled tonight in New York City. The fun gets started at 5pm (PT) on ESPN and the NFL Network. It’s only the first round today. The second and third rounds are tomorrow, while rounds four-seven are Saturday.

The Carolina Panthers have the first overall pick. For the first time in years, there’s not a clear No. 1 choice. Most of the experts have Auburn quarterback Cam Newton as the top choice, but Carolina hasn’t declared that yet. It sounds like the Panthers have dwindled their choices down to Newton, Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, LSU defensive back Patrick Peterson, and Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus.

I’m giving Newton pretty good odds at this point. I’m 98% sure he’s going to be the top pick. I’m not saying it’s the right choice…I’m just saying it’s more than likely he’s going to hear his name called first. I personally think Newton has “BUST” written all over him. I’m scared of a guy who has one solid season under his belt (does the name Ryan Leaf ring any bells?). Before 2010, Newton (who played at Florida at the time) threw just 12 career passes. Of his 2,908 career passing yards, 2,854 came last season. That freaks me out.

There’s a reasons scouts drool all over Newton though. The kid is 6’6″ and 250 pounds. He’s athletic as hell, running for 1,473 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Not to mention, Newton guided Auburn to a national championship. An athletic quarterback with leadership skills is a hot commodity. I can definitely see the appeal.

I personally think LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson is the best player in the draft. Anyone who is described as “built like a safety with the speed of a corner” (as Peterson is) gets me excited. I can understand why Carolina wouldn’t use the No. 1 pick on him (he doesn’t play a “marquee” position), but that means someone else is going to get a steal. Most experts have Peterson sliding to the Arizona Cardinals at No. 5 overall.

I’m also a big fan of Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley. The guy absolutely dominated the national championship game last season. He’s an absolute monster, listed at 6’4″ and 291 pounds. There are questions about his work ethic and attitude, but when you look past that, you have a shutdown d-lineman (I’m thinking he’s the next Albert Haynesworth). It’s unclear where he’ll end up. I’ve seen mock drafts with him going as high as No. 4 overall to Cincinnati, and others that have him going as low as No. 12 to Minnesota.

I’m pumped to see how this all shakes out, but more than anything I’m excited for a sense of normalcy in the NFL. I’m tired of all the bickering. I hate hearing about the labor negotiations and the court rulings. For the next three days we get to pretend that football is back, and I’m more than OK with that.

Let me know what you think is going to happen tonight (or over the next few nights for that matter). Leave a comment below, connect with me on Twitter and/or Facebook, or email me at tim@timlewissports.com. I would love to hear from you!

One final thing (I couldn’t figure out where to squeeze it in earlier)…here’s the complete draft order for all seven rounds.
