October Mailbag

The months keep flying by. I can’t believe it’s already time for the October mailbag. It’s going to be November before we know it.

While last month’s mailbag had a lot of questions about me, this month the focus turns back to sports (with a few questions about me as well).

Let’s get to it…

I want to hear your take on BCS busters Boise State and TCU. Do you think they should get there shot? — Josh Grenner

I go back and forth on this. I think every team in the country deserves a shot at a national championship, but would Boise State (No. 3 in both national polls) and Texas Christian (No. 4 in the AP Top 25; No. 5 in the USA Today Poll) even have a chance if they played in the SEC or any other BCS conference?

The Broncos and Horned Frogs are a fun Cinderella story. They’ve shown they can compete with some of the best schools every year, but they don’t have to prove it every weekend (their conferences aren’t strong enough). To me, a one loss team in any BCS conference carries more weight than an undefeated team in a non-BCS conference. At the same time, I don’t think either university should just be shrugged off. If that’s going to happen, why would the smaller schools keep suiting up (aside from money)? The GMAC Bowl (that’s the most random bowl game I could think of) shouldn’t have to be any school’s ultimate goal at the start of the year.

This whole debate goes away if the NCAA adopts a playoff system. That way Boise State and TCU have a chance to really show they have what it takes to compete with the big boys. I know it’s a drastic change (and it’s heavily debated), but it’s the only thing that will ever give the little guys a chance (because we sure as hell know the BCS won’t). I say we even keep the bowl games (99% of them don’t count for a national title now anyway). It makes sense to everyone except the NCAA. I don’t get it.

In a very long-winded way of answering your question, Boise State and TCU deserve a shot at a title (playoff system or not) if they play themselves into position. They definitely shouldn’t be crammed into a bowl game against each other again. They deserve much better than that.

What NFL team has surprised you the most this season? Disappointed you the most? — Ryan Curtis

I’ll start with the teams that have disappointed me the most. There are two: the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. I don’t root for either team, but I chose them to do big things in my preseason predictions (I picked the frickin’ Cowboys to win the Super Bowl). While Dallas (1-3) and San Francisco (0-5) have sucked this year, I wouldn’t count them out yet (it’s still too early). With that said, I have more confidence in the Cowboys than the 49ers. San Francisco has a lot of talent, but I don’t see them turning it around. If they do, they still have a chance in the weak NFC West (someone’s probably going to win that division with an 8-8 record).

The biggest surprise has to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It hasn’t always been pretty, but they’re getting the job done (two of their wins have come by only three points). They’re even more impressive when you figure two of their three victories have happened on the road. It’s very possible Tampa Bay (3-1) can keep this up all season. They’ll lose to New Orleans next week, but they can compete with St. Louis and Arizona right after that (they also get Carolina again, San Francisco, and Detroit later in the season).

A lot of people would consider Kansas City (3-1) a surprise, but I don’t. I picked them to finish second in the AFC West before the season started. I never thought they were going to make the playoffs, so we’ll see if they prove me wrong there.

What would you eat if you were to cheat on your diet? What is the oddest food craving you’ve ever had? What is your favorite type of beer? — Al Brown (@Radar74)

I cheat on my diet from time to time. Like I said in my recent post about junk food, I bought Oreo cookies and milk when I got off work the other night. I really try to limit myself to one cheat meal/snack a week. It’s a pretty intense approach, but it’s also one of the reasons I’ve had such great results in my quest for fitness.

I don’t crave fast food or anything like that anymore, but I do occasionally crave candy. It’s never chocolate…it’s always fruit candy (Spree, Runts, Gobstoppers, etc.). I can usually curb those cravings by eating some real fruit though. I don’t know about my oddest food craving ever, but I can tell you the strangest craving I’ve had since starting my latest diet: pork rinds. I never, ever, ever, eat pork rinds (does anyone?), but I was craving them a month or two ago. I didn’t give in…thankfully.

As far as my favorite beer…that’s easy: Coors Light. I don’t need fancy microbrews. I keep it simple. I’m obviously not very picky either. I turn to the “Silver Bullet” whenever I can.

That’s it!
