One Week Down…A Lifetime To Go

There’s nothing easy about eating right and working out. I’ve been on my current fitness kick for a week, but it feels like it’s already been a month. I think my body is still in shock. I didn’t really ease into it like I said I would. This is the hardest I’ve worked in a long time.

Don’t get me wrong…I’m having fun and I’m seeing results already (I promised updates, so you’re going to get them). I weighed myself on the trusty break room scale at work tonight. I started at 230 lbs. a week ago…now I’m at 219. I was surprised. Honestly, losing weight isn’t my top goal in this whole thing (even though it’s a huge perk). I just really want to feel better. Before I was working out, I was always tired and dragging myself around. I now have a lot of energy and I’m getting a lot of things (cleaning, cooking, etc.) done.

I can’t take all of the credit though. I am surrounded by awesome people who want to help. My friend Nicole (a co-worker) brought me some healthy food for a snack one night. Here is what she brought me (I really liked it!). I also need to give a shout out to my friends on Twitter. Travis (@Dogfatherfrank) invited me to an Athletic Training class at a local gym. It’s almost like CrossFit. You do a certain lift (bench press, weighted sit-ups, bicep curls, etc.) for 45 seconds straight, get a 15 second break to transition to the next lift, and do 45 seconds all over again. It goes on like that for an hour (and also includes running laps around the basketball court and spinning). It kicked my ass, but it was well worth it. I also need to give props to Desiree (@BensAgony) for sending me Crock-Pot recipes (NOTE: Crock-Pots are the coolest invention in the world) and Anyaa (@blackzag05) for passing along some great workout tips. I can’t thank everyone enough for helping me!

My workouts have taken place in the gym and out of the gym. I’ve done something physical every day since I started a week ago. My workouts usually consist of cardio and lifting at the gym, but I’ve also started playing hockey again. I say that, but I’ve only really played once since I started this fitness plan (“started playing hockey again” sounds like I’ve gone a bunch). I’m hoping to play again this week though. It’s an incredible workout.

I need things like hockey to break up the monotony of going to the gym every day. Like I said, it’s a great workout and it’s much more enjoyable than plugging away on a treadmill (you’re having fun and not thinking about how much you are putting into it). I can’t wait for the weather to turn nice. I can start riding my bike as well. Variety will be the key to my success. If you have any other cool ideas…please pass them along.

I have to push myself to workout every day, but the hardest part might be eating right. I see these commercials for bacon cheeseburgers at McDonald’s, $10 pizzas at Pizza Hut, and the $1 bargain menu at Arby’s. Obviously, the promos are doing their job, because they make me want to bolt to the nearest fast food restaurant and scarf down everything they have. The good news is…my willpower is staying strong (for now). I haven’t cheated once (OK…I broke down and had one beer, but that’s it)!

My diet has consisted primarily of fruits and vegetables, way too much chicken, protein shakes, tuna, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter, and cottage cheese. It’s boring, but it seems to be working. I need a break from chicken, so I just bought some ground turkey, salmon (I also picked up a really good rub), and some crab legs (it will be hard to not dip them in butter). Again, I’m more than open to any other healthy foods/recipes. As with working out, variety is going to be the key to my success. Let me know what you eat when you’re dieting.

I don’t really have much else to add. I bet reading about my diet/fitness is the most exciting part of your day (thanks Captain Sarcasm). In a sense, this blog keeps me accountable though. I’ve laid it all out on the table for you. I don’t want to let you down (and I don’t want to let myself down either…especially after a week). I also really hope this might encourage others to start their own fitness plan. Let me know if you do…I’d love to hear all about it (seriously!). We can be in this thing together!

I’ll leave you with a motivational statement:

“Keep trucking, you know.” — Frank “The Tank” Ricard, Old School

I’ll report back next week…

In the mean time, please feel free to get in touch with me at tim@timlewissports.com or on Twitter @TLKREM2 or @lewissports.

P.S. Like I said I would in my original workout blog (It’s Time To Slim Down), I took some before workout/diet pictures. I’m going to hold on to them until a month from now (when we can compare them to some after workout/diet photos). I’m still a little embarrassed by how I looked when I started.
