Random Ramblings

I know you’re all very disappointed that I haven’t blogged in a week (sense the sarcasm), but now I’m back. I don’t have a real focus today, so I hope you can keep up with my random ramblings:

1)  The NBA Finals start tonight. I’m not much of an NBA fan (it’s not real basketball if you ask me), but I feel like I should acknowledge that it’s going on. I would have never guessed the Dallas Mavericks would be playing for the crown this season (my guy Tony Tucker didn’t think so either). On the other hand, the Miami Heat were a given for the finals the instant LeBron James declared that he was taking his talents to South Beach. With that said, I can’t get myself to root for the Heat. I can’t stand teams that pay for championships (especially the New York Yankees). I also have a problem with three of the best players in the NBA teaming up in free agency to win a crown. Miami will likely win it all…and I’ll hate the NBA more than I already do.

2)  The Stanley Cup Finals start tomorrow. Unlike most of the world, I’m much more interested in the NHL than the NBA. I can’t wait to see the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins play for Lord Stanley’s Cup. In my NHL preview, I pegged the Canucks to play for the title (against the Pittsburgh Penguins), so I’m not surprised they’re in. I also had Boston winning the Northeast Division, but I had them losing before the Eastern Conference Finals. I’m a little surprised the Bruins are playing for the championship, but I’m not stunned. I think it’s going to be an awesome series. Don’t be surprised if it comes down to goaltending (Tim Thomas v. Roberto Luongo). In the end, I think Vancouver wins the Stanley Cup in six games (but that’s probably because of my West Coast bias).

3)  I love college football, but I hate that it’s tainted. It’s just like Major League Baseball: I loved the Mark McGwire v. Sammy Sosa home run race, but now I wish it never happened because of steroids. Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel got what he deserved (he resigned from his post yesterday). I’m glad he quit. He exploited his players (or let them exploit themselves) to win national championships. How could you ever feel right winning a title knowing that you did it the wrong way (that question is directed at John Calipari as well)? There will always be cheating in college football (I’ll continue to turn my head the other direction), but it’s nice to see the system can still weed out the worst of the worst like Tressel. The big question is…who’s next? I’m sure we’ll find out soon.

That’s it for today! I’d love to hear what you think about the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Finals, and cheating in college football. Leave a comment below, connect with me on Twitter and Facebook, or email me at tim@timlewissports.com.
