Video: The Greatest Tackle I’ve Ever Seen

There are big hits in football, but there are also great tackles. There’s a huge difference to me.

I posted a must-see hit on my website a few months ago (here’s a link to refresh your memory). There’s definitely skill that goes into that, but ultimately the defender is launching himself like a missile at the receiver. I’ve seen a million guys go for the knockout blow and miss. Ultimately, they should have wrapped up the ball carrier for the tackle. It happens all the time.

The tackle I’m about to show you is something I’ve never seen before. It’s really cool to me because I got to see it in person. It happened last Saturday when I went to watch Washington State play California. I wasn’t working, but I used my media pass to get down on the sideline with my brother (it’s one of the many perks of being a sportscaster).

California held a 14-10 lead late in the third quarter. Washington State needed a big play to shift the momentum, and they got it from freshman linebacker C.J. Mizell:

It’s too bad you can’t hear the crowd, because the place absolutely erupted! It’s also disappointing the play-by-play guy didn’t sell it very well. I was on the field and not watching on TV, so it’s the first time I’ve heard the call. It was a huge play and he made it sound like a normal three-yard loss. He should have called it like this play (and this one doesn’t even hold a flame to Mizell’s tackle).

I’m a stickler about media members cheering on the sideline. You just don’t do it. I don’t think it’s professional. We’re supposed to be unbiased in this business. Even though I was at the WSU/Cal game as a fan last week, I was still wearing my media pass. I stuck to my rules and decided I wasn’t going to root for the Cougars (even though I graduated from Washington State). I’m so strict that I didn’t even react (I literally just stood there) when Washington State scored a touchdown to take the lead . As for the big tackle, I couldn’t stop myself from reacting. I didn’t cheer or anything, instead I grabbed on to my brother with both hands, probably made the weirdest face I’ve ever made in my life, and said, “Oooooooooooh!” I guess that’s best thing that could come to mind at the time.

It’s funny to see the play now because it happened so fast. I remember the tackle like it took place in slow motion. The takedown definitely shifted the momentum, because Washington State picked off a pass on the very next play. The Cougars didn’t make it count though, settling for a measly field goal. WSU allowed a late touchdown after that and eventually lost 20-13.

I would love to see more video great tackles (or big hits). Mizell from earlier this season on there as well.
